Live readings of scenes from Sophocles’ Ajax and Philoctetes as a catalyst for powerful discussion about suicide prevention and caregiving.

Theater of War is an innovative public health project that presents readings of scenes from ancient Greek plays—Sophocles’ Ajax and Philoctetes—as a catalyst for guided discussions about the challenges faced by service members, veterans, and their families. Using Sophocles’ plays to forge a common vocabulary for openly discussing the visible and invisible wounds of war, these events are aimed at generating compassion and understanding between diverse audiences.

Co-presented by Theater of War Productions, Bravehound, and University of St. Andrews.

Support for our digital programming is provided, in part, by the Mellon Foundation.

Featuring performances by Lesley Sharp (Afterlife), David Strathairn (Nomadland), Nyasha Hatendi (Alex Rider), and Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit).
Theater of War: Scotland will take place on Zoom Webinar and can be accessed on personal devices. The event Zoom link will be distributed via email and available to registered attendees starting two days prior to the event.
This event can also be attended in person at The Byre Theatre, Abbey Street, St Andrews. To RSVP in person attendance for this free event, email Gabby Green at gg66@st-andrews.ac.uk or go to https://byretheatre.com/shows/theater-of-war/.
