DM citation: “For outstanding good work in the location of casualties in burning buildings. Undaunted by smouldering debris, thick smoke, intense heat and jets of water from fire hoses, this dog displayed uncanny intelligence and outstanding determination in his efforts to follow up any scent which led him to a trapped casualty.”

MALI
Mali was part of a British Military unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2012. During his tenure, Mali was deployed to assist in an operation to secure an enemy stronghold, situated in a multi-storey building.
Mali was sent through direct fire on two separate occasions to conduct searches for explosives. Mali had a reputation as a “guardian angel”.

DM citation: “For loyalty, courage and devotion to duty under hazardous conditions of war 1941 to 1945, while serving with the 1st King’s Rifle Corps in North Africa and Italy.” Her courage and devotion to duty were of very real and considerable value and her courageous example materially helped many men to keep their heads and sense of proportion in times of extreme danger.

DIESEL
Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois, served with the French National Research, Assistance, Intervention and Deterrence special anti-terrorism force (RAID).
This heroic French police dog was tragically killed as he led a raid on a Paris terror cell in November 2015. His gallant actions helped to protect human life in the face of imminent danger.

DM citation: “For bravery and devotion to duty during the US Army’s invasion of Sicily on 10 July 1943.” Chips, a German Shepherd-Husky-cross, has been recognised for his key role during the beach landings on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. As well as his heroics on the battlefield, Chips served as sentry at the Casablanca Conference in January 1943, where Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US President Franklin D Roosevelt met.

The PDSA Dickin Medal was instituted in 1943 in the United Kingdom by Maria Dickin to honour the work of animals in World War. It is a bronze medallion, bearing the words “For Gallantry” and “We Also Serve” within a laurel wreath, carried on a ribbon of striped green, dark brown, and pale blue. It is awarded to animals that have displayed “conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units”. The award is commonly referred to as “the animals’ Victoria Cross”.
